My guest today is Mariana Castro, an immigrant rights advocate and DACA recipient.
Mariana moved from Peru to the U.S, unknowingly leaving family she hasn’t seen in over fifteen years. She was one of the first people to receive DACA which led her to become a public voice for undocumented students, on her first two weeks of college. She became involve with a campaign advocating for in state tuition for undocumented students, speaking at press conferences and working with immigrant organizations across Florida. That work helped pass a law in 2014 that changed the futures of thousands of students. Today, the political climate has shifted, and that progress is very much at risk.
Mariana was once taught never to share her story, but her story was the catalyst for change.
On this episode we’ll talking a lot about DACA, which refers to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, a U.S. policy started in 2012 that granted temporary protection from deportation and a work permit, to certain people who were brought to the country as children without legal status. If you think immigration is black and white, with this episode we invite you to think again.
Before we begin make sure to subscribe to our channel so we can keep telling stories about immigrants just like you.
