The freight-code Griffin ran that logged Romano's bag - and unraveled the alibi
In this episode, we follow the sequence of actions and records that link a dead man's phone ping, a freight manifest, and a depot employee to a night that left no 911 call. Which procedural choices and small pieces of data shift the investigation away from the obvious lead?
Person: Daniel Romano
Date: last message 8:47 PM; phone ping 9:04 PM
Location: Cutter Creek; freight depot
Item: burgundy suitcase logged with discretionary freight code
Employee: Griffin logged the code and appears on depot camera at 6:31 AM
- Romano's final confirmed contact was a seven-word text at 8:47 PM saying his car died on Route Nine and he'd get a ride.
- Phone records place Romano on Route Nine at 9:04 PM, 2.3 miles from the freight depot, with no further movement after that ping.
- A burgundy, hard-sided suitcase tagged "Romano" arrived at the depot at 6:42 AM and was processed under a discretionary freight code.
- The discretionary code used to log the bag required employee credentials and bypassed standard cross-reference checks; the code traced to an employee named Griffin.
- Depot security footage, pulled with one day to spare, shows Griffin carrying a burgundy suitcase onto the freight belt at 6:31 AM and running the same code.
