A racing bib, four safety pins, and a brown smear of blood hung six feet up a creosote bush-placed twelve feet from the road and three miles west of the official search area. The missing runner, Rebecca Clark, left three deliberate signals and survived nine days with a broken ankle, but why did every team read them wrong? What single misread shifted the search away from where she actually waited?
In this episode, we follow the sequence of events from Rebecca's last GPS ping to the moment her signals were finally discovered. You will hear how her training, field skills, and small survival actions shaped nine days in the Mojave-and ask whether standard search protocols missed the one clue that mattered most.
Person: Rebecca Clark
Age: 26
Event: Ridgecrest Endurance Marathon
Date: September 5, 2011
Injury: lateral malleolus fracture (right ankle)
- Rebecca left the marked course at mile 19 and stepped 22 degrees northwest off the route at approximately 2:00 PM on September 5, 2011.
- Her GPS watch sent its last location ping at 2:17 PM, two miles northeast of the Caldera Ridge junction.
- She traveled approximately four miles west-northwest from that last GPS ping before stopping beside a sandstone shelf.
- She had roughly 12 ounces of water, two gel packets, a space blanket, a headlamp, a notebook, and a pen when stranded.
- On the afternoon of September 6 she tied six inches of orange flagging tape ankle-high to a creosote branch; it was found by Walt Ybarra on September 8.
