Monica Roberts, a Pacific Gas meter reader, photographed it before she touched it

A laminated emergency card lay perfectly centered on a concrete utility pad four hundred yards from the ocean, dry and face up, its surface scratched with seven tally marks. Monica Roberts photographed the card before she touched it, and those seven marks became the only visible trace of a woman who had been missing at sea for six days. What did that seventh mark mean, and how did a private grief reroute a multi-day search?

In this episode, we tell the story of Rhonda Allen, a fifty-two-year-old maritime surveyor who set sail on her thirty-six-foot sloop Patience and disappeared north instead of south. Her boat sank in a rogue wave and she survived six days on a cockpit hatch cover until a late change to the search grid brought a helicopter to her location.

Person: Rhonda Allen
Vessel: 36-foot sloop Patience
Date of sinking: Night of June 5-6, 2011
Location of rescue: ~40 nautical miles north of Calder Harbor near Point Harrow
Duration adrift: Six days before rescue

- Rhonda purchased fifty-one gallons of diesel on the Sunday before her departure and filled a tank that held fifty-two gallons.
- She filed a float plan saying she was going south for a weekend passage but in fact headed north toward Point Harrow.
- A rogue wave struck at approximately midnight and Patience sank in four to six minutes with the companionway open.
- Rhonda surfaced clipped to her harness, clung to a flat fiberglass cockpit hatch, and exhausted her handheld VHF by day two.
- The laminated card with seven deep tally marks washed inland and ended up dry on a utility pad four hundred yards from the water, photographed by Monica Roberts.
