A humpback whale approximately eight metres long became severely entangled in shark control programme nets off Currumbin Beach on the Gold Coast, trapped from head to tail. The Seaworld Foundation rescue team, working with the fisheries department, deployed 12 people across three vessels to free the whale after nearly four hours battling wind, rain and heavy swell. The rescue marks the beginning of the annual humpback migration season, with up to 10 whales becoming entangled in shark nets each year.
