A proposito di questo titolo

From the 13th-century rise of the Mali Empire to the transatlantic slave trade and Ghana's 1957 independence under Kwame Nkrumah, this series traces the full arc of Ghanaian history. Lucas and Luna explore the gold-rich Akan kingdoms, the Ashanti Empire's military resistance against British colonialism, and the fortified castles of Elmina and Cape Coast that witnessed centuries of human trafficking. They examine the legacy of Yaa Asantewaa's war, the rise of cocoa as a global commodity, and the pan-Africanist dreams that made Ghana a beacon for liberation movements worldwide. Each episode digs into specific moments—the rule of Osei Tutu, the Golden Stool's symbolism, the 1948 Accra riots, and the coup that toppled Nkrumah—to understand how ancient empires, colonial violence, and independence struggles shaped modern Ghana. Why does the story of a small West African nation matter? Because Ghana's past holds lessons about wealth, power, and the long road to freedom that still resonate across the continent and beyond.

  • The Woman Who Defied an Empire: Nana Yaa Asantewaa — Fexingo History
    Apr 26 2026
In 1900, as the British Empire sought to humiliate the Ashanti by demanding the Golden Stool, a 60-year-old queen mother named Yaa Asantewaa rallied her people in one of West Africa's most remarkable acts of resistance. This episode tells the story of the War of the Golden Stool — not the political maneuvers of the Asantehene, but the grassroots uprising led by a woman who refused to bow. Lucas and Luna explore the events leading to the war: the British governor's outrageous demand, the council of chiefs hesitating in the night, and Yaa Asantewaa's legendary speech that shamed them into battle. They follow the eight-month guerrilla war fought from the dense forests around Kumasi, the siege of the British fort, and the eventual defeat that transformed Ashanti into a British protectorate. Along the way, they examine Ashanti military organization, the role of the Golden Stool as the soul of the nation, and how Yaa Asantewaa's legacy was reshaped by Ghana's independence movement. Who was this warrior queen, and why did her rebellion fail?

  • The 1844 Bond: Ghana's first step toward independence — Fexingo History
    Apr 26 2026
Before Kwame Nkrumah, before the 1948 riots, there was the Bond of 1844 — a document signed between the Fante chiefs and the British that set the Gold Coast on a path toward colonial rule, but also planted seeds of modern Ghanaian sovereignty. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the overlooked story of how nine Fante chiefs signed away judicial power in exchange for British protection, how the Bond became the legal foundation of the colony, and how later nationalists like John Mensah Sarbah used it as a tool to argue for self-government. They also look at the tension between the Fante elite and the Ashanti, the role of the merchant George Maclean, and the quiet resistance of the chiefs who insisted on writing the Bond in Fante as well as English. It's a story of compromise, ambition, and the long, quiet road to independence.

  • The School System That Built Ghana's Independence — Fexingo History
    Apr 25 2026
In the early 20th century, a remarkable experiment in education changed the course of Ghana's history. This episode explores the Achimota School, founded in 1927 by the British colonial government but shaped by a visionary headmaster, Reverend Alexander Fraser, and the brilliant Ghanaian educator Dr. James Kwegyir Aggrey. Aggrey's philosophy of blending the best of African and Western traditions—summed up in his famous analogy of the black and white keys of a piano—created a generation of leaders who would go on to drive Ghana's independence movement. We also look at the controversial role of the school's first African headmaster, Francis Aggrey (no relation), and how the school's unique curriculum, including its emphasis on local languages and crafts, sparked debates about colonial education. This episode covers the founding of Achimota in 1927, Aggrey's return from the US and his tragic death in 1927, and the school's eventual alumni, including Kwame Nkrumah, who was a teacher there in the late 1920s. We also touch on the legacy of the school's experimental policies, such as coeducation and the teaching of African history, and how they sowed the seeds for a proud, independent Ghana.
