After the Winter War and the Continuation War, Finland faced one final, painful conflict: the Lapland War of 1944–45. Forced by the armistice with the Soviet Union to expel their former German allies from northern Finland, Finnish troops under General Hjalmar Siilasvuo pursued the German 20th Mountain Army as it retreated through Lapland, employing a scorched-earth strategy that devastated the region. This episode explores the bitter irony of Finns fighting Germans, the destruction of the town of Rovaniemi, the stories of child evacuees, and the legacy of these events in modern Finnish memory.
