On August 10, 1566, a crowd gathers outside a friary near Steenvoorde to hear a former hatmaker preach. By the time the sermon ends, twenty people have stripped the building of every painting, statue, and altarpiece. It takes less than an hour.
Three days later, it happens again. Then again. Within two weeks, the wave has reached nearly every province of the Low Countries — culminating in a single, staggering night at Antwerp's Cathedral of Our Lady, where six thousand people break in and gut one of Europe's largest Gothic churches in a matter of hours.
This episode reconstructs those ten days through the eyewitnesses who lived them: an English merchant's agent who counted the number of people actually doing the breaking, a hostile Catholic official cataloging what was lost, and a Ghent chronicler marveling at the one masterpiece the crowd chose to spare. It follows the destruction town by town — through the places that fell and the places whose militias held — and asks the question historians still debate: was this spontaneous rage, an organized movement, or something that doesn't fit neatly into either box?
And it follows the fallout upward to the three people who now have to decide what happens next: a regent making promises she isn't authorized to make, a nobleman whose careful balancing act is beginning to unravel, and a king three thousand miles away, writing letters about gentleness while quietly sending an army north.
Ten days of broken statues. A year before the reckoning arrives.
