Your business is your baby, so you grind at it 24/7. But here's the gut check: if you took two weeks off, would it survive, or would it fall apart without you?
If the honest answer is "it'd fall apart," that's not a business. That's a job you built for yourself, and you're the only employee who can't quit. This week Stoy Hall, CFP® brings Gabriel Langley back on the show to talk about the thing most owners never fix: building a machine that runs without you, instead of grinding harder and calling it growth.
Gabriel's core truth lands early and it sticks. You got yourself where you are, but systems are what give you freedom. The problem is most owners keep their entire operation locked in their own head. The SOPs exist, they're just never written down, so nobody can step in, nothing can be handed off, and the owner stays the bottleneck instead of the accelerant. Gabriel breaks down how to actually get it out of your brain and onto paper, starting with one deceptively simple move: define what "done" looks like without you in the handoff.
They go deep on reflection and community, two things owners skip when they're moving too fast. Gabriel makes the case that assessing your systems should be a daily habit, not a once-a-year offsite, and that you're flying blind if you're not in a community of people who actually understand your industry. Stoy backs it with his own numbers, a sales cycle that runs six months to four years, which is exactly why he can't knee-jerk change things every 30 days. The lesson: give a change 60 to 90 days, sometimes 12 to 18 months, before you throw it out.
Then Stoy drops the framework that makes this episode. If you're going to figure out what to delegate, do it through three lenses. One, if money weren't a factor, who would you hire? Two, can you trust someone else to do it? Three, and this is the hard one, can you trust yourself to keep your hands out of the cookie jar and let them do their job? That third lens is where most owners break.
Gabriel's plan to close is simple and you can start it today in 15 minutes: honestly assess your own capacity. Are you actually the best version of your business when you're the end-to-end person, or are you the ceiling it keeps hitting? Slow down, look at what can be automated or streamlined, and get out of your own way.
