Hematophagy, or blood-feeding, is a specialized survival strategy utilized by a diverse array of organisms across the animal kingdom. Among mammals, vampire bats stand out as the only species that rely entirely on blood, employing specialized incisors and anticoagulant saliva rather than movie-monster sucking techniques to feed. Because blood is low in calories and exceptionally high in water content, these bats must quickly process liquids and often depend on a social safety net of shared meals to survive energy shortages. Beyond mammals, the practice is widespread among hundreds of insect species, leeches, certain fish, and even specific birds like the vampire finch. While these creatures utilize various physiological adaptations to extract sustenance, many also function as dangerous disease vectors capable of transmitting serious illnesses to livestock and humans.
