  • Fascism On Film - Episode 12 - Burn!
    May 16 2026

Welcome to the twelfth episode of our ongoing series: Fascism On Film. Each episode of this series, the Holmes Brothers look and review a film that has to do with fascism. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events.

On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers look at and discuss the historical drama from Italian director Gillo Pontecorvo: Burn!. The film stars Marlon Brando, Renato Salvatori and Evaristo Márquez. Brando stars as a British agent provocateur called Sir William Walker who is sent to the island of Queimada, an island in the Lesser Antilles and a Portuguese colony. He is asked to overthrow the island through a slave revolt in order for the British sugar trade to profit from. Walker meets and befriends José Dolores who becomes a leader of the slave rebellion. Things turn complicated when Dolores leads a revolt against the new rulers. Brando said he did the best acting of his career on the film Burn! despite how difficult it was to make. Even though they quarrelled on set, Evaristo Márquez had to act as mediator between them, Brando said Pontecorvo was one of the three best directors he ever worked with. The other two were Elia Kazan and Bernardo Bertolucci.

  • Fascism On Film - Episode 11 - Berlin Express
    Apr 25 2026

Welcome to the eleventh episode of our ongoing series: Fascism On Film. Each episode of this series, the Holmes Brothers look and review a film that has to do with fascism. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events.

On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers look at and discuss the post-war spy thriller from Cat People director Jacques Tourneur: Berlin Express. The film stars Robert Ryan, Merle Oberon, Charles Korvin, Paul Lukas, Robert Coote and Reinhold Schünzel. A group of strangers from various places, the UK, USA, Russia and Europe, are travelling together on a train to Berlin. Onboard the train with them is Dr. Heinrich Bernhardt a diplomat who becomes the target of a Nazi Assassination plot. Upon arriving in bombed out Frankfurt, Robert Ryan and co head out into the ruined city to find Heinrich before it is too late. The film makes very good to use the real locations that still show the marks of the Second World War to give a moody and harsh authenticity that feels reminiscent of Carol Reed's The Third Man. A suspenseful and fast paced noir spy caper. Available to watch on the Criterion Channel.

We hope you enjoy this episode and stay tuned for more episodes of this Fascism On Film series.

  • Fascism On Film - Episode 10 - The Secret Agent
    Mar 28 2026
"'I'm not a violent person. But this guy... I would kill him with a hammer. I'd smash his whole head with a hammer."Welcome to the tenth episode of our ongoing series: Fascism On Film. Each episode of this series, the Holmes Brothers look and review a film that has to do with fascism. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events. On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers look at and discuss the Oscar nominated film from director Kleber Mendonça Filho: The Secret Agent. Released in 2025. This year at the 98th Annual Academy Awards, the film was nominated for four Oscars. One of the nominations was for Wagner Moura in the Best Actor category. Wagner Moura plays Armando who is using the name Marcelo as a cover. Set in 1977 during a time of mischief and political turmoil in Brazil under military dictatorship, Armando travels to Recife during the carnival holiday. His son Fernando is there, living with Armando's late wife Fátima's family. He is former professor and is trying to escape and flee the country. In order to not face any persecution for what happened years before the events of the film. The Secret Agent is a blend of so many different styles and tones. At it's heart is a Neo-Noir-ish historical political thriller, but it does seamlessly shift into bizarre but compelling territories. A sophisticated film made for grown ups and is shot and told in an unconventional way.
