Dive into the intriguing narrative of British history as presented by Milton, who expertly navigates the vast array of sources with a discerning eye. While his scholarly rigor might remind listeners of classic works like DON QUIXOTE and THE MORTE DARTHUR, Milton‚s unique approach prioritizes engaging storytelling over dense documentation. Although much of the scholarly detail has been streamlined for a smoother listening experience, his critical evaluations of historical figures shine through. From his skeptical view of King Canutes legendary command over the tides to his nuanced appraisal of Boadicea and Alfred, Miltons candid opinions create an entertaining and thought-provoking exploration of history. His bold comparisons between post-Roman Britain and Cromwell‚s republic reveal a sharp wit that led to some of his critiques being suppressed during his lifetime. The affectionate account of Miltons life by his elder nephew, Edward Philips, adds a personal touch, despite its occasional inaccuracies and omissions. This blend of personal insight and historical analysis not only enhances our understanding of Milton the man but also sheds light on his profound thoughts and personality. (Summary by T. A.
