  • From Air Coryell to Who Dat: The Greatest Eras of Our Teams
    Sep 28 2026

Every sports fan has an era that defines what their favorite team means to them. In this episode of the Historically Speaking Sports Podcast, Dana Auguster and Charles Combs take a trip back through the greatest eras of their favorite NFL teams. Dana makes the case for the San Diego Chargers’ Air Coryell era from 1978–1984, while Charles takes us through the New Orleans Saints’ Sean Payton and Drew Brees era from 2006 through their Super Bowl XLIV championship in February 2010.

Dana revisits the explosive Chargers offenses led by Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, John Jefferson and Don Coryell, examining how Air Coryell helped revolutionize the passing game and produced some of the most memorable offensive performances and playoff games of the era. Charles looks at the transformation of the Saints under Sean Payton and Drew Brees, from the franchise's turnaround in 2006 to the emotional journey through the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and ultimately the Saints' first Super Bowl championship.

But what actually makes an era the greatest in franchise history? Is it championships, legendary players, innovative coaching, unforgettable games, cultural impact—or the memories created for generations of fans? Dana and Charles explore those questions while celebrating two very different eras that left lasting marks on NFL history. From Air Coryell in San Diego to Who Dat in New Orleans, this episode is a celebration of the greatest eras of our favorite teams.

  • Call of the Game: The Announcer Calls That Live Forever”
    Sep 7 2026

There are moments in sports that you remember because of what happened. There are moments you remember because of where you were when they happened. And then there are moments where the voice of the announcer becomes part of the moment itself.

You don't just remember the play... You remember the call.

You remember the excitement in the announcer's voice.

    The change in their tone.

    The anticipation.

    The disbelief.

And sometimes, that one unforgettable phrase that gets permanently burned into your sports memory.

Because sometimes the announcer makes the moment even bigger!

In this episode of Historically Speaking Sports Co-Hosts Dana Auguster and Charles Combs are stepping into the broadcast booth and revisiting some of their all-time favorite announcer calls in sports history. They're talking about the calls that didn't just describe what happened...They became part of what happened.

And they're not just talking about the plays, they're talking about the voices, the personalities the excitement., the drama, and those calls that, decades later, you can still hear perfectly in your head.

Because that's the magic of sports broadcasting.

A great announcer doesn't simply tell you what you're watching.

    They help you remember it.

Speaking of announcers, coming up later in the show we will send a shout out to a Hall of Fame basketball announcer that was so much of a homer for his team, he became the embodiment of that franchise for close to 40 years.

We have all that coming up on this edition of the Historically Speaking Sports, a member of the Sports History Network.
