What’s your spiritual language or spiritual Battle?
We are a royal priesthood (keep that in mind as you’re reading this)
1 Peter 2:9 NASB 2020
“But you are A CHOSEN PEOPLE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR GOD’S OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
Starting with 4:14 and going into chapter 5, because the train of thought connects directly to chapter 5. Keep in mind, in the original Greek (and Hebrew texts) there are no chapters and verses. We’ve added them to make it easier to find the Scripture. [It’s more important to cite the text and not cite the reference] - we never see “Bible verses in Scripture”
BEGOTTEN: unique divine sonship and eternal relationship
JESUS WAS NOT MADE
ANGELS AND HUMANS WERE CREATED
HAVING BEEN MADE PERFECT “HAVING BEEN COMPLETED” 5048
It’s not a Chiastic structure, but we can see the author uses a symmetrical structure in these verses 1-10
11-14 - 6:12 exhortation; no general agreement or logical scheme for why it was inserted here. ch 6:13 resumes the thought beginning in ch. 4
- It is commonly assumed on the basis of 5:11–6:3 that the community addressed had failed to mature in faith and understanding,
- and consequently required rudimentary instruction rather than the advanced exposition of Christ’s priesthood and sacrifice
Suffering builds empathy (sympathy)
** life’s difficulties, hardships, sleepless baby/ difficulty in raising children / out of relationship with grown children; grandchildren
** Spiritual language: Aliah’s story
** Battling sin: what’s your sin issue?
2:17: Jesus had to become like his brothers to become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God
3:1-6 authority of Jesus as high priest on the grounds of his faithfulness to God who appointed him (man appoints priests, Jesus appointed by God)
4:15–5:10 the writer takes up the assertion that Jesus is a “merciful high priest in the service of God.”
Thus, the purpose of 3:1–5:10 as a major division is to consider the two relationships necessary for priestly mediation: the relationship with God, in which Jesus proved faithful, and the relationship with men, in which he proved compassionate.
A The old office of high priest (5:1)
B The solidarity of the high priest with the people (5:2–3)
C The humility of the high priest (5:4)
C´ The humility of Christ (5:5–6)
B´ The solidarity of Christ with the people (5:7–8)
A´ The new office of high priest (5:9–10)
