It's Halloween night, and the Marlowe family is headed home from a perfect evening of trick-or-treating in Pine Hollow. Then the station wagon dies on a dark, empty stretch of road. Mom and Dad go to find help and leave the radio on for the kids. Hours pass. A bulletin interrupts the music: a dangerous prisoner has escaped nearby. And then, from the roof of the car, comes a sound.

Clank. Clank. Clank.

Tonight's story is not a Carman's Crypt original. "Head Hunter" is my retelling of a classic urban legend, one that has been passed around campfires and sleepovers for generations. I kept the bones of the tale as it's told and added new characters, a trick-or-treat setting, and a few details of my own. I saved it for Halloween night.

Lock your doors. Keep the radio on. And whatever you hear on the roof, don't turn around.

🎧 Best heard in the dark, with headphones.
