A discarded pink size-four sneaker and a folded receipt that read "WALKED NORTH" turned up eleven miles from the nearest paved road - yet both child and man had already been found alive thirty-six hours earlier. What drove a 53-year-old technician to leave a shoe at a creosote shrub and walk through the night guided by a photo of an old grazing map, and how did small, deliberate choices keep an eight-year-old safe?
In this episode, we follow the four days in the Nevada high desert described in the file and the scene found by County surveyor Ralph Lawson, recounting the sequence of the blown tire, the rationing decisions, and the unconventional signals that confused search teams - could a pair of notes, a roof-top first aid kit and a single sneaker be the clearest instructions a rescuer could leave?
Person: Edward Padgett
Person: Sophie
Date: June 15-19, 2011
Location: Madera Flats District, Nevada high desert
Finder: Ralph Lawson
- A pink size-four sneaker was found at the base of a creosote shrub, double-knotted and intact.
- The note inside the shoe was written on a Chevron receipt in block letters: "WALKED NORTH" with "JUNE 16. E. PADGETT. GIRL SAFE."
- Padgett and Sophie were found alive thirty-six hours before the sneaker was discovered, seven miles north of the shrub.
- The truck’s orange first aid kit was placed on the roof for thirty-one hours with GPS coordinates sealed inside and one copy tucked under the windshield wiper.
- At the time the tire blew, the ambient temperature was 107°F and they had approximately forty-four ounces of water, rationed at four ounces per person per hour.
