A stranger named Joe Bodry killed a man in Dodge City, Then, he got on his horse and rode ninety miles northwest. He made it across the Smokey Hill River before his horse played out and fell behind a small knoll. Bodry put a knife in him and settled down to wait. Half an hour later, he shot Matt Dillon's horse out from under him, and crippled Chester's horse with a slug in the shoulder. Then suddenly, Bodry gave up. He threw down his guns and walked toward Matt and Chester with his hands in the air. Chester says "You think it's a trick, Mr. Dillon?" Matt says "I don't know, Chester, but if he makes a move, I'll kill him". As Bodry draws near, Matt says "That's far enough, Bodry. Now turn around". As Bodry turns, he says "I ain't armed, Marshal". Matt says "No. You know, I'm curious, Bodry, why didn't you shoot it out?" Bodry says "I don't want to kill anybody, Marshal". Matt says "You killed a man in Dodge". Bodry says "He went for his gun. I had to". Matt says "Some of the witnesses say he didn't". Bodry says "Oh, sure. Friends of his. I heard them. That's why I lit out". Matt says "A man looks guilty when he runs. You should have stayed and faced it there". Bodry says "Now, what kind of shake could I get in a strange town, Marshal? Everybody would be against me". Matt says "The law protects you if you're innocent. You'll have to stand trial now, anyway". Bodry says "Well, maybe I made a mistake, but I'm still alive". Matt says "Yeah, and a long way from Dodge". Chester says "Say, by gracious, that's right. How are we going to get back, Mr. Dillon?" Matt says "Well, we crossed the Overland Express Road about five miles back. We'll just walk to the road and wait for a stage, I guess". Chester says "Yeah, but the stage don't go up to Dodge from here, sir". Matt says "Well, we'll take it into Fort Donner. Maybe the Army will lend us some horses there and we can turn them back in at Fort Dodge".
