Jesus was not speaking in metaphor when He said it. He was not using exaggerated language to inspire His followers. He was not casting vision meant only for admiration. When Jesus declared, “Greater works than these shall you do,” He was issuing a promise–and a mandate.
Those words were not spoken casually. They were spoken, intentionally, fully aware of their significance, timing, and impact. Jesus understood He was about to return to the father. He knew the Church would soon exist without His physical presence. And before He departed, He made a statement that would shape the future of His followers.
He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
