The great Roman general Maximus has conquered his final battle against Germanía and is eager to return home to his wife and son; unfortunately, the emperor has other plans and asks him to take over the empire and return it to the people.
Upset by his loss to the throne, the emperor's son Commodus kills his father, and stages a coo, sentencing Maximus and his family to death.
In a turn of fate, Maximus escapes his execution but is sold into slavery as a gladiator. With his prodigious fighting skills, he is quick to earn the people's hearts and the emperor's eye. Will Maximus be able to exact his revenge and free roam, or will the jealous Commodus rule through fear?
