It's our Halloween special! This time, Rachel and Jason are exploring ghosts in literature—and what a Christian perspective brings to the conversation.
From the ancient stories of The Odyssey and The Aeneid to Shakespeare's Hamlet and Macbeth, and finally Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, ghosts have appeared in literature for centuries. But what do these mysterious figures really represent? Memory, guilt, grief, unfinished business—or something more?
We explore how ghost stories have changed throughout history, the influence of ancient beliefs and medieval Christianity, and what the Bible actually says about the dead, the spirit world, and attempts to communicate with those who have passed away.
Along the way, we consider the story of the rich man and Lazarus, the words of Jesus, the writings of Augustine, and the Christian hope of life beyond death. We also discuss why A Christmas Carol may be one of literature's most meaningful ghost stories—and how its supernatural visitors point toward questions of repentance, redemption, and the chains we forge in life.
This isn't simply a discussion about what goes bump in the night. It's a conversation about mortality, faith, grief, and the hope Christians have in Christ.
What's your favorite ghost story in literature or film? And do you think ghost stories can communicate meaningful truths about life, death, and faith? Let us know in the comments!
