  • Episode 3: What Buyers Want. Producing Cattle That Pay in the Feedlot. Guest: Clint Langley
    Oct 8 2026

    Send us your questions!

In this episode of Pasture to Profit with the McDaniel Brothers, Mark and Roger McDaniel sit down with cattle buyer Clint Langley to take listeners inside the mind of the person sitting in the seats on sale day.

Clint explains what he looks for when evaluating cattle, from weight, frame, muscle, uniformity, disposition, flesh and breed type to the traits that can ultimately determine whether he reaches for his bid card—or puts his hand down.

The conversation goes beyond what happens in the sale ring. The group follows a calf from the ranch to the sale barn, through the order buyer and into the feedlot, discussing how health, preconditioning, average daily gain, feed conversion, morbidity, days on feed and carcass performance all affect the value of those cattle.

One of the biggest takeaways is simple: the producer sees the calf they're selling, but the order buyer is thinking about the animal they're going to feed.

The episode also dives into what producers can do 60–90 days before sale day to add value, including vaccination, weaning, bunk breaking, water training, health management and producing a more uniform, market-ready group of cattle.

Mark and Roger also discuss the upcoming Feeder Select Sale on November 13th at McDaniel Livestock Exchange and how the program is designed to connect well-managed, verified cattle with serious buyers looking for quality and consistency.

Whether you're a cow-calf producer preparing to sell this fall or simply want to better understand what happens to your cattle after they leave the sale barn, this episode provides an inside look at what buyers are looking for—and why it matters to the bottom line.
