How To Overcome Fear? Psalm 27
Do you have fear? Fear of rejection? Fear of not having money? Fear of losing job? Fear of losing friends? Fear of your enemies?
Are you righteous or wicked? If you ae righteous, don’t worry. God will help you. The Bible has many people having fear. David had many fears when he faced Saul and his son Absolom who wanted him dead. He often talked to God, crying out to Him and pray to him. His prayer often praises God believing and trusting God will deliver him from his enemies. Let’s look at Psalm 27.
1The Lord is my light and my salvation- whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life- of whom shall I be afraid?
2When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall.
3Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident.
4One thing I ask of the Lord , this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.
5For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.
6Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the Lord .
7Hear my voice when I call, O Lord ; be merciful to me and answer me.
8My heart says of you, "Seek his face!" Your face, Lord , I will seek.
9Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, O God my Savior.
10Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.
11Teach me your way, O Lord ; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.
12Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, breathing out violence.
13I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
14Wait for the Lord ; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord .
David wrote this Psalm when he was either facing Saul or his son Absolom who were after him. King Saul fear his throne will be gone as David was anointed by God to be the next King to replace him so he wanted David dead. Absolom full of hatred with his father David because he did nothing when his sister Tamar got rape by their half-brother Amnon. He wanted to remove David from being King and he will become king. We can see that fear comes with hatred and greed.
David reminds himself “Do not fear for the Lord is my light and my salvation.” He should not be afraid. Evil men attacking him will stumble and fall. Even when there is wars, he will not fear. He remined himself to seek God, turn to Him. For in trouble, God is a refuge for him. He will protect him. He reminds God to hear Him, be merciful and gracious to him and answer him. God will never forsake him even when his father and mother forsake him. He asked God for directions to go, to guide the way. A safe path to go. At the end of his prayer, he reminds himself to wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
We can learn from this Psalm that we need to turn to God, seek him in times of trouble. Pray to God. Remind yourself the goodness of God. He will never forsake you. Do not fear. In Proverbs 24:16 says for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes. So if you are facing many trials and tribulations now, do not fear. You will be able to overcome them. You will rise again. God is always there for you. He will see you through. Remember this verse God’s promise to help you in Isaiah 41:13 For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.
