Fear at work is not always loud. Sometimes it sounds like “I’ll just do it myself,” “I need one more data point,” or “I’ll deal with that person later.” We start with some Halloween energy, then get real about what actually scares leaders: bringing in a new hire and hoping they thrive, trusting a teammate with a long-time client, and living with the quiet pressure to deliver every time.
We also trace how fear changes over a career. Early-stage business owners often fear cash flow and making payroll. Later, it becomes a leadership balancing act between delivery, sales, and marketing, especially in consulting firms that ride peaks and valleys. And then there is the deeper one that sticks around: the fear of losing something you love, whether that is the work itself, a client relationship, or a team you have grown attached to.
From there, we zoom out to what we see in clients across executive leadership, middle management, and frontline teams: fear of being wrong that leads to overanalysis, fear of asking for help, and fear of making tough people decisions. We talk about control as the common thread behind burnout, disengagement, and the push for “work-life balance,” and we wrestle with a modern twist: when AI makes it easy to stop thinking and hand responsibility to a system. If you have ever delayed a hard call, held on too tight, or felt like control was slipping, this conversation will hit home.
