  • Peer Mentorship for Young Adults: Transitioning After Rehab & Wilderness Therapy with Colin and Hayley of Not Therapy
    Oct 2 2026

In this episode of Families Navigating Addiction and Recovery, I sit down with Colin MacDonald and Hayley Caddes, co-founders of Not Therapy.

Both Colin and Hayley bring powerful, transparent lived experiences from the "troubled teen" industry, including early behavioral struggles, high-risk choices, psychiatric wards, wilderness therapy, and therapeutic boarding schools.

We discuss the major transition gap young adults face when leaving structured treatment programs, why traditional clinical therapy is not always enough, and how peer mentorship can fill the void. Colin and Hayley share advice for parents on shifting away from fear-based decision-making, setting reasonable expectations, and building long-term, trusting relationships that allow young adults to develop genuine independence.

  • How Nervous System Regulation Heals Family Trauma with Suze Kenney
    Sep 25 2026
In this episode of Families Navigating Addiction and Recovery, we welcome back Suze Kenney, co-founder of Emergo Academy and co-author of Actualized Recovery: It's Not About 12 Steps, Recovery Is a Brain Thing. Together, we explore addiction and self-sabotaging behaviors through a biological, nervous-system-first lens. Suze shares the powerful case study of a young woman trapped in a severe parasympathetic freeze response, isolating in her closet, unable to make eye contact, and struggling with an eating disorder. She explains why traditional interventions often fall short when the brain is locked in a constant state of perceived threat. We also discuss why physiological health, including hydration, nutrition, sleep, and nervous system regulation, must be addressed before emotional or psychological healing can take hold. Finally, we explore why family members need to prioritize their own physiological regulation, enabling them to set compassionate, effective boundaries and better support their loved one's recovery. 🎧 Follow or subscribe to Families Navigating Addiction and Recovery for more conversations about addiction and family recovery. ⭐ Leave a review and share this episode with someone who may benefit from it. • How the Drama Triangle Keeps Families Trapped in Addiction (and How to Escape) with Dave Kenney
    Sep 18 2026
In this episode of Families Navigating Addiction and Recovery, I welcome back my friend and colleague Dave Kenney, co-founder of Emergo Academy and co-author of Actualized Recovery: It's Not About 12 Steps, Recovery Is a Brain Thing. Dave brings over 30 years of experience in human performance, education, and brain-first addiction recovery. We dive deep into Karpman's Drama Triangle, specifically unpacking the Rescuer role that so many family members naturally fall into out of love, fear, and anxiety. Dave explains why trying to control or fix an addicted loved one never works, how enabling removes natural consequences, and how family members can transition from the Victim-Rescuer-Adversary Triangle to the Hero-Coach-Opportunity Triangle to restore peace, autonomy, and genuine influence. 🎧 Follow or subscribe to Families Navigating Addiction and Recovery for more conversations about addiction and family recovery. ⭐ Leave a review and share this episode with someone who may benefit from it.
