• Local Business Spotlight: The Bernie House
    Jan 31 2026

Domestic abuse is an unfortunate reality for far too many people. Many people will flee a bad situation with no real plan for the future beyond surviving. Today, we chat with Patti Slaughter, the Founder and Executive Director of The Bernie House.

Named for Patti's father and his legacy of caring, The Bernie House (or houses) is a place for families to live in a true home while they get back on track. Victims of domestic violence will typically flee their situation after seven incidents, but shelters are only a temporary solution. The Bernie House and its four homes are what comes next! (And to correct a statistic that I tried to recall when speaking with Patti-- 2 out of 5 people are victims of domestic abuse!)

During their stay, resources for education, employment, and life skills are made available. At the end of their stay, all the contents of their home are left with them. Truly, this is an amazing organization that defines the phrase "small but mighty."

We also hopped on the phone with Stephanie Canali, who has written a book about her situation and her experience with The Bernie House-- Breaking Chains, Building Homes: The Bernie House Transformation. Stephanie's story is one of grit and perseverance with a VERY happy ending! Plus, she'll be at Hearts and Hatters (see below) signing books!

We also chat about Hearts and Hatters! This gala is an annual event around this time of the year, held in support of The Bernie House. And it is a great time to boot! This year, it will be held on Valentine's Day at the Graduate by Hilton Hotel on West Street. Tickets are available at The Bernie House's website or on the Where In Annapolis (app).

A deadly cold-weather incident at Truxtun Park underscores how dangerous these conditions can be, while Anne Arundel County and Annapolis push toward normal operations with shifted services and continued snow and ice work. Plus, Live! Restaurant Week gets an extension—giving diners a little extra time to chase prix fixe menus around Arundel Mills—and a local business owner makes the case that Annapolis needs more bold "yes" energy and less default "no" as the city looks ahead. An armed assault at Calvert and West led to an Annapolis Police arrest, while the city rolls out a 2-hour delayed opening, shifting trash pickup, transit changes, and an extended warming center as the region digs out. AACPS is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, plus there's a clever snow-day scheduling idea worth a listen, and Maryland Health Connection enrollment is up despite higher premiums thanks to new state assistance. And if all that snow shoveling works up an appetite, Wonder is opening on Riva Road with mix-and-match ordering that could finally end the household dinner debate— all that and more on today's DNB!

Winter storm impacts are forcing Monday closures and service shifts across Anne Arundel County and Annapolis, while the city also rolls out a new Black History Month series at the Michael E. Busch Library. The county is launching a hate bias incident reporting portal designed to track trends and guide outreach, and CovingtonAlsina is offering an "Allowance Workshop" to help kids build smart money habits—because it's never too early to learn the difference between "saving" and "that was on sale." • Bonus Podcast: The 20th Annual SOUPer Bowl is Almost Here!
    Jan 25 2026

February 8th is a big day. While the Super Bowl will be played in San Francisco, here in Annapolis, the SOUPer Bowl is happening at Heritage Baptist Church!

For 20 years, the community has come together to support the Light House Homeless Prevention Center by hosting a community luncheon featuring SOUP (of course), salad, bread, and dessert. ONE HUNDRED percent of the donations are passed along to the Light House.

The entire community is welcome, and a suggested donation of $10 will go a long way toward helping the homeless in our community this winter. If you can't make the event--please consider a donation (select SOUPer Bowl in the drop down).

Pastor Scott Shelton joins us today as we discuss one of my favorite events of the year and what it means for him, his congregationan, and the community. We both commiserated that the Eagles (mine) and "that team in Dallas" (his) were not playihng football later in the day!

There is a lot going on on Sunday and this is the perfect way to kick off the day and jopin the community for a meal!.

  • Local Business Spotlight: Burdens Men Carry
    Jan 24 2026

Men are macho and can handle anything and everything! Right? Maybe not!

On Sunday, February 15th, there will be a free panel discussion on Burdens Men Carry focused on mental health for men. A panel of three experts will be led through a discussion, and then the panel will take questions (face-to-face or anonymously) from the audience, followed by a roundtable discussion.

Today, we chatted with Phil Kaplan, one of the panelists, about his battle with depression and his ongoing work in advocacy. The event is NOT just for men but for spouses, partners, and families as well.

The free event will be at the Eastport United Methodist Church from 2pm to 4:30pm.
