Episode 8: Opie’s Charity
Paul and Tim are back to tackle Season 1, Episode 8 of The Andy Griffith Show, and Mayberry is feeling a little upside down this week. For starters: where on earth is Barney Fife?
With the deputy off duty, Andy takes center stage—and he is uncharacteristically hard on poor Opie when the boy only pledges a measly three cents to the Underprivileged Children’s Drive. Sure, Aunt Ro was right that Paul watches too much TV, but Aunt Bee was right too when she steps in to straighten out the Sheriff and teach Andy an essential lesson in parenting.
We also take a deep dive into guest star Lurene Tuttle (Mrs. Annabelle Silby) and the bizarre subplot involving her runaway husband, a faked death, and an actual funeral service held in town! Beyond Mayberry, we celebrate Tuttle’s legendary, decades-long career across classic film and television—including her turn as the boarding house owner in Don Knotts' The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, and her memorable scene as Sheriff Chambers’ wife in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (defending Norman Bates and chatting about "periwinkle blue").
Grab a cold bottle of pop on the front porch and join us as we nip another classic episode in the bud!
