You might have heard eight tapes. You have never heard this reel. In a room with no number at the top of the Mors Delectamenti Hotel, a captive knight sits across the table from a reel-to-reel recorder that talks back. It calls itself Lou Phillips. It used to work in radio. It has notes, and the first one is brutal: too sane, burn it, nobody climbs a mountain for sane. Side A takes you behind the first four tapes: the burned takes, the talk between takes, and the long, strange business of manufacturing a summons in a voice that isn't quite his own. There's a bartender who tells the same joke wrong on purpose, a Manager who hums a lullaby older than the building's ledgers, and an invitation on cream stock requesting the pleasure of his company. At brunch. Everything records. Whether it happened is a mixing decision. Side B picks up with Track Five.
