Silence does not always mean agreement.
In this episode of Before the Pressure, Dr. Arnold Sanchez explores how high-pressure environments can cause teams to stop challenging assumptions, questioning decisions, and speaking honestly when it matters most.
Strong leaders create room for useful dissent before commitment—because the best time to expose a weak assumption is before reality does it for you.
In This Episode
- Why pressure can make teams more cautious and less honest
- How leaders can mistake silence for alignment
- Why disagreement can improve high-stakes decisions
- How a leader’s reaction determines whether people keep speaking up
- The importance of challenging assumptions before execution begins
- Why healthy teams can debate hard, decide, and then commit
Today’s Pressure Prep
1. Invite one challenge before an important decision. Ask:
What are we missing?
Or:
If this turns out to be the wrong decision, what do you think we will have overlooked?
Then listen without immediately defending the plan.
2. Watch your reaction. When someone challenges your thinking, ask:
Am I evaluating the information—or defending my position?
You do not have to agree with the challenge. But you need to hear it clearly.
Reflection
When the pressure rises, do people around me become more honest—or more careful?
Remember:
Pressure should accelerate the decision—not eliminate the challenge.
And:
Culture is not created by the invitation to speak. It is created by what happens after someone does.
Invite the truth. Test the assumption. Then decide and move.
