It’s just after four o’clock in the morning.

Ken Monger is awake and making his way downstairs towards the kitchen.

But when he reaches the door, something is wrong.

The kitchen has been completely turned upside down.

And this would be far from the last strange event to trouble the Monger family.

In 1980, Ken and Jenny Monger temporarily moved into a council house in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, while their usual home was being modernised.

Almost immediately, unexplained things began to happen.

Objects moved. Strange noises were heard. The family experienced disturbances they simply couldn’t explain.

And before long, whatever was responsible had been given a name:

Barney.

This week on This Is A Ghost Story, Kathryn & Alison tell the strange story of the Berkhamsted Poltergeist — a case that became serious enough to attract the attention of the local press.

Then Producer Andrew digs into the research, including contemporary newspaper reporting from November 1980, to find out what we can establish about the Monger family, their temporary home and the strange events said to have taken place there.

Who — or what — was Barney?

And what really happened inside that ordinary Hertfordshire house more than 45 years ago?
