Lafayette Cemetery sits on a hilltop above the town of Lafayette, Oregon.

It is a heavy place — the kind you feel in your chest before you know why.

Visitors report scratches from unseen hands, EMF spikes near an old tree, a presence that follows too close on the path back to the gate.

Local legend says a witch is buried here. That she cursed the town before she died. That the curse is still unfolding.

Her name, in the stories, is Anna Marple.

She is not buried here. She was never accused of witchcraft. She was never executed. She died in 1916, at the age of 73, in Jacksonville, Oregon —100 miles south of Lafayette —in an unmarked grave that nobody visits, because everyone is busy visiting the grave she was never in.

In this episode, we go to Lafayette Cemetery —to the fog and the heaviness and the recorder that once caught nothing where something should have been —and we follow the real story of Anna Marple:the 1886 murder of David Corker, the hanging of her son Richard, the eighteen minutes it took, and the screaming of a mother outside the courtyard wallsthat a town chose to call a curse.

We sit with the complication Anna presents —because she may not have been innocent, and this episode is not interested in easy redemptions.

And we ask the question underneath the legend:what does it tell us about ourselvesthat we took a complicated, grieving, possibly guilty womanand turned her into a witch? That we moved her body into our cemetery without her consent, the way we moved her into our story without her consent?

This is not just Anna's story. It is a very old, very human habit. And it did not end in 1887.

CONTENT NOTE

This episode discusses a violent murder, a botched public execution, the death of a child, and the cultural pattern of labeling women as witches. It also contains moral ambiguity — Anna Marple is not presented as innocent, and this episode does not ask you to see her that way.

It asks something harder than that.

Take what you need. Leave the rest.
