Sleep should be one of the most natural things we do, so why can it become so difficult? A few bad nights can quickly turn into worrying about whether you'll sleep at all, creating a cycle where the fear of insomnia actually makes falling asleep even harder.
Dr. Andrew Rosen and Dr. David Gross take a closer look at the connection between sleep and mental health, including how poor sleep can affect mood, anxiety, concentration, memory, and the way our brains function during the day. They explore circadian rhythms, disrupted sleep schedules, the difference between the number of hours we sleep and the quality of that sleep, and how everyday habits can quietly work against us.
They also dig into our reliance on sleeping pills and why someone may still be taking medication years after the stress that originally caused their insomnia has passed. From sleep procrastination and late-night scrolling to worrying over sleep-tracking data, they look at some of the modern behaviors that can make healthy sleep even harder to achieve.
The conversation turns to practical ways to help the brain wind down naturally, including sleep hygiene, CBT for insomnia, mindfulness, consistent routines, and creating a calmer environment before bed. Sleep may seem simple, but when it starts going wrong, it can affect nearly every part of how we think, feel, and function.
