Chapter 2- The Woman Who Would Not Be Defined (1558–1563)

Elizabeth inherited a divided kingdom, religious uncertainty and a political establishment keen to influence the direction of her reign. As a young, unmarried woman ruling in a world dominated by male authority, she faced immediate questions about her legitimacy, her choice of ministers, the future of the English Church and, above all, whom she would marry.

This episode explores the creation of Elizabeth’s early queenship: the establishment of her government, the religious settlement, the importance of William Cecil, and the role played by Robert Dudley as he became one of the most influential figures in her personal and political life. Marriage negotiations offered diplomatic opportunities, but they also threatened to place the Queen’s future in the hands of a husband or foreign power.

Elizabeth began to develop a distinctive way of ruling, using ambiguity, ceremony, language and carefully managed appearances to preserve her independence. The foundations of the Elizabethan monarchy were being laid, although the questions surrounding marriage, succession and religious identity would continue to trouble the reign for decades.

Researched, written and read by Paul Carmichael.

Research note

This episode was researched against primary-source material and institutional historical resources, particularly the National Archives' records concerning Elizabeth's 1563 parliamentary answer, the 1559 religious settlement, Elizabeth and Robert Dudley, Amy Robsart's coroner's inquest, Mary, Queen of Scots, the Rising of the North and the political consequences of the 1570 papal excommunication. Where evidence is disputed, the script deliberately avoids presenting later tradition as established fact.
