Diane Connors grew up knowing her dad did cool work as an astrophysicist. But she's always been curious to know more: How did he get into it? What's he proud of? What's he learned over the years?

Martin Connors is a Professor of Astronomy, Mathematics, and Physics at Athabasca University. He studies asteroids, auroral effects on space weather, and instrumentation. His research on Earth's Trojan asteroids was on the cover of the journal Nature in 2011.

Stephanie Harpe says she got a lot of things from her dad Henry, including a wicked work ethic and a positive outlook on life.

Stephanie is a musician and advocate for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Henry grew up in Fort McMurray before the oil boom. Their family was Metis, and did a lot to support other families in town.

As oil sands mining ramped up, he moved to Edmonton and travelled back and forth to work at Syncrude and Suncor. Along the way, he tried to make sure other Indigenous workers were treated fairly. On this episode of Clock In, host Jay Gilday speaks with Stephanie and Henry about how he made the most of tough situations, why their family moved to Edmonton, and what Stephanie admires most about her dad to this day.

Working at the same place as your mom can be a privilege and a pain. Tamisan Bencz-Knight is the Manager of Strategic Relationships & Partnerships at Edmonton's Food Bank. Marjorie Bencz is the Executive Director, a member of the Order of Canada, and her mom.

Tamisan loves and respects Marjorie, but wonders if she knows about the anxiety Tamisan feels working together. And she wonders if everybody else thinks she only has her job because of Marjorie.

Saniya Ghalehdar wants to make sure her dad Nas makes it into the history books. Nas Ghalehdar owned Teddy's Bar & Grill on Jasper Avenue from 2006 – 2017. The business first opened in 1932, and has passed through several immigrant families over the decades. Previous owners like Saul Reichert are as famous as its steak and sandwiches. But Nas' story isn't as well-known.

Originally from Iran, Nas studied math and mechanical engineering but found desk jobs unfulfilling. When he bought Teddy's, he kept most of the staff and menu classics. What he brought was mentorship, Persian music, and Beyoncé-level determination.

Shima Robinson has always admired her mom. Shima served as Edmonton's 10th Poet Laureate, and performs spoken word poetry under the name Dwennimmen. Her mom, Elsa Robinson, is an accomplished visual artist and former teacher.

Shima finds Elsa such a stalwart and reliable human being. Given how hard it can be to be a parent and make a living as an artist, Shima's always wondered: How has Elsa pulled it off? And how have Elsa's jobs and art informed each other?

Meet Jay Gilday: musician, postal worker, and host of Clock In. Delivering mail in Edmonton has always felt meaningful for Jay. Imagine his surprise when he found out his grandfather did the same work in the Northwest Territories – by dogsled.

In this first episode of Clock In, follow Jay to the picket line to learn why he and his fellow workers decided to put it all on the line by going on strike. Then hear him sing at open mic night at River City Revival – including a song he wrote to honour his connection to his grandfather, "Shoes."
