Gynecological Oncologist - The five main types of gynecologic cancer are: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar. (A sixth type of gynecologic cancer is the very rare fallopian tube cancer.)

Cancers that start in the female reproductive system are called gynaecological cancers.

Gynecologic cancers begin in different places within a woman's pelvis, which is the area below the stomach and in between the hip bones. Each gynecologic cancer is unique, with different signs and symptoms, different risk factors and different prevention strategies. All women are at risk for gynecologic cancers, and risk increases with age. When gynecologic cancers are found early, treatment is most effective.

The treatment you need depends on where the cancer started. Knowing the type of cancer means you can get the correct information about it.

Ovarian cancer / Primary Peritoneal

Ovarian cancer is when abnormal cells in the ovary grow in an uncontrolled way.

Cervical cancer

Cervical cancer is when abnormal cells in the lining of the cervix grow in an uncontrolled way. The cervix is part of the female reproductive system.

Uterine / Endometrial Cancer / GTD

Endometrial cancer is cancer of the lining of the uterus (called the endometrium). The uterus (or womb) is where a baby grows during pregnancy. The fallopian tubes and ovaries are on both sides of the uterus. The cervix is the mouth of the uterus (or womb) that connects it to the vagina. These reproductive organs are located in the pelvis, close to the bladder and rectum.

Womb cancer

The womb is the pear shaped muscular bag that holds a baby during pregnancy. Most womb cancers start in the lining of the womb. They are also called uterine or endometrial cancer.

Vaginal cancer

Vaginal cancer is very rare. It starts in the vagina and is more common in older women.

Vulvar cancer

Vulvar cancer is a rare cancer. It can start in any part of the female external sex organs, the vulva.
