I find my work really meaningful in supporting a cause I care a lot about. However, there is no path for growth, promotion, or raises and I have some dislike of upper management. Do I stay where I am comfortable but might stagnate or feel undervalued? Or do I put the time and energy into trying to find something better in this tough job market?

Question:

How can I figure out what kind of career I should be looking into? Or should I focus on the work I’m doing now and plan for my growth in this field? With either choice, I am open to returning to university or other programs to further my education or take on new training.

I have been asking this same question to my family and friends, and they each come up with a different answer. I think their response is more about what they worry about than what they think I should do. I’m hoping that you’ll choose my question and give me an impartial answer.
