Election looks back in time and refers to God's choosing certain people that He deemed to be His children before the formation of the world, "just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him" (Ephesians 1:4). Predestination looks forward in time to the destiny He has planned for those whom He has chosen, "who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood…" (1 Peter 1:1-2).
