Some journeys change you. April's changed everything.
At 28, April's carefully planned life—college, teaching degree, marriage, kids—was falling apart. She couldn't find a teaching job. Dating was miserable. Then her 21-year-old cousin Greg died in a house fire, and something broke.
So April did something drastic: she decided to hike the Appalachian Trail—all 2,190.6 miles—despite having zero backpacking experience. Her first attempt in 1996 ended at 400 miles, limping home with injuries. But in March 1998, she went back.
In this powerful conversation, April shares:
✨ Why only 20% of people who attempt the AT actually finish ✨ What it's like hiking 8-10 hours a day with no cell phone, no music, just your thoughts ✨ Talking to her cousin Greg on the trail for months—and not getting answers ✨ Leaving the trail when her grandmother died, attending the funeral, then coming back ✨ The hardest day of the hike: September 9th in the White Mountains ✨ Rain-soaked, 40 degrees, crossing rushing water up to her knees ✨ Everyone telling her to stop—but hearing a voice say "go" ✨ Climbing Kinsman Mountain in the dark with only a dim headlamp ✨ Hearing her grandmother's voice for the first time: "You'll be okay. Just take it slow. One step at a time." ✨ How her cousin Greg—a track athlete—pushed her to keep going ✨ Using these lessons to motivate her staff for 26 years ✨ Becoming a keynote speaker sharing her story
This isn't just a hiking story. It's about grief, spiritual guidance, and the courage to keep going when everything tells you to stop."
