Some journeys change you. April's changed everything.

At 28, April's carefully planned life—college, teaching degree, marriage, kids—was falling apart. She couldn't find a teaching job. Dating was miserable. Then her 21-year-old cousin Greg died in a house fire, and something broke.

So April did something drastic: she decided to hike the Appalachian Trail—all 2,190.6 miles—despite having zero backpacking experience. Her first attempt in 1996 ended at 400 miles, limping home with injuries. But in March 1998, she went back.
