  • Australians can handle harsh truths - so why won't politicians tell them?
    Jul 21 2026
Australians are often told that we don't like reform. We apparently want better housing affordability, a stronger economy, better healthcare, improved aged care, a simpler tax system and a sustainable budget, but we don't want to give up anything to get there. But is that really true? In today's episode of Demographics Decoded, Simon Kuestenmacher and I discuss his recent New Daily article arguing that Australians can handle harsh truths, provided leaders are honest about the trade-offs and clear about where the country is heading. And this is where the demographic lens becomes so important. Australia is growing. Australia is ageing. Housing demand is rising. Younger Australians are carrying a heavier load, and older Australians are understandably trying to protect what they've built. So the real question is not whether Australia needs reform. It clearly does. The bigger question is whether our leaders have the courage, imagination and communication skills to explain why short-term pain may be necessary for long-term gain. We unpack why leaders often shy away from honest conversations about reform, even when the problems are already staring us in the face. We discuss how Australia's ageing population, housing pressures, and tax burdens are all part of the same bigger picture. We also explore what COVID taught us about public buy-in, social license, and the willingness to accept short-term pain for long-term gain. And we look at why trust, clear communication, and a fair explanation of trade-offs are essential if Australia is to make the right calls. Takeaways • Australians are more capable of handling hard truths than politicians often assume. • Honest reform requires explaining both benefits and unavoidable trade-offs clearly. • Housing affordability problems worsen when governments avoid long-term policy honesty. • Ageing population pressures will heavily strain healthcare and aged care systems. • Short election cycles discourage leaders from making unpopular but necessary decisions. • Public trust drops when politicians talk around problems instead of confronting them. • COVID showed Australians will accept restrictions when the purpose feels credible. • Social licence matters because people resist rules that feel excessive or unclear. • Migration debates need precise arguments, not vague slogans or emotional shortcuts. • Loss aversion makes reform harder when leaders emphasise what people might lose. • You're likely to live longer than you think and run out of money doing it
    Jul 14 2026
What if I told you that the average Australian born today will likely live well into the 22nd century? That's not science fiction. That's where the demographic data is pointing right now, and it has enormous implications for how we work, how we invest, how we retire, and how we think about money. Most Australians are still planning their finances around a life that ends at 80 or 85. But what happens when you live to 100 - or beyond? Suddenly, a 20-year retirement becomes a 35-year one. The superannuation balance you thought was enough... probably isn't. And the property and wealth strategy you built in your 40s may need a serious rethink. In this episode Simon Kuestenmacher and I discuss the longevity revolution and what it means for Australians. We explore how longer lives are reshaping retirement, superannuation, and the way people think about money. We discuss why the old age sixty-five retirement model no longer fits modern life. We look at how longer lifespans are changing housing demand, aged care, and downsizing timelines. We also unpack why health, social connection, and lifelong learning matter more than ever for living well longer. Takeaways • Australians may need thirty-five-year retirements, not twenty-year retirements. • Superannuation balances must stretch further as lifespans keep increasing. • Healthier ageing depends on prevention, not just treatment after illness. • Retirement is becoming a gradual transition instead of a hard stop. • Physically demanding workers face the greatest pressure from delayed retirement. • Longer lives increase demand for accessible homes and aged care housing. • Older property owners may delay downsizing, tightening housing supply. • Renting in old age creates greater financial stress than owning outright. • Strong friendships reduce loneliness, mental health strain, and retirement shock. • Lifelong learning and soft skills become more valuable in longer careers. • What Vampires Can Teach Us About Property Investment, Wealth, and Intergenerational Advantage
    Jul 7 2026
What if the secret to becoming wealthy wasn't being smarter than everyone else? What if it wasn't timing the market, picking the next hot suburb, or finding some clever tax loophole? What if the real secret was simply living long enough to let good assets quietly compound in the background? Now, I know that sounds strange, but in a recent article in The New Daily, Simon Kuestenmacher used a fascinating idea he called "vampire economics." His argument was that if vampires existed, they should be incredibly wealthy. After all, they don't retire. They don't have a 30-year investment horizon. They don't panic because interest rates rise for a year or two. They don't sell a good asset because the media tells them the market is about to crash. They can buy scarce assets, hold them for centuries, and let time do the heavy lifting. Of course, you and I don't have 400 years to invest. But there's a powerful lesson here for property investors, business owners, families and policymakers. In today's episode Simon Kuestenmacher and I discuss the idea of "vampire economics" and what it teaches us about building wealth over time. Takeaways • Wealth grows fastest when you let strong assets compound over many years. • Long-term investors ignore short-term noise and make calmer decisions. • Scarce assets in desirable locations usually outperform flashy speculative bets. • Property works best when population growth keeps underlying demand rising. • Income alone does not create wealth unless it is converted into assets. • Delaying gratification gives compounding more time to do the heavy lifting. • Family wealth lasts longer when children learn money habits early. • The bank of mum and dad can significantly reduce lifetime mortgage costs. • Overly fast decisions often destroy the benefits of patient investing. • Passing on financial wisdom matters as much as passing on money.
