Daniel Deronda by George Eliot follows two intertwined lives in Victorian England. Daniel Deronda is a thoughtful young man raised by the wealthy Sir Hugo Mallinger, but he knows little about his true family background. His search for identity leads him to Mirah Lapidoth, a young Jewish woman he rescues from despair, and to Mordecai, a visionary scholar who encourages Daniel to explore Jewish history, culture, and spiritual purpose.
Alongside Daniel’s story is Gwendolen Harleth, a proud and intelligent young woman whose financial difficulties push her into marriage with the wealthy but controlling Henleigh Grandcourt. The marriage becomes increasingly oppressive, forcing Gwendolen to confront her own ambitions, fears, and moral choices.
As Daniel discovers the truth about his ancestry, he begins imagining a life devoted to something greater than personal comfort. The novel explores identity, marriage, responsibility, prejudice, faith, personal freedom, and moral growth, while contrasting Gwendolen’s painful self-discovery with Daniel’s search for belonging and purpose.
