  • SNAPPS: Teaching NP Students to Present Patients With Confidence
    Nov 4 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Many nurse practitioner students feel ready for clinicals on content, but don’t know how to present a patient to their preceptor. In this episode of the DNP Faculty Podcast, host Dr. Michael Maymi talks with Dr. Danielle Chaplin and Dr. Kim Castillio. All three are nurse practitioners, preceptors, and faculty at the University of Florida College of Nursing. They discuss how they teach the SNAPPS model in their Advanced Health Assessment course.

SNAPPS is a learner-centered framework for case presentations:

    • Summarize the history and findings briefly
    • Narrow the differential to two or three likely diagnoses
    • Analyze the differential by comparing and contrasting the possibilities
    • Probe the preceptor about anything uncertain or confusing
    • Plan management, including diagnostics and treatment
    • Select a case-related issue for self-directed learning

    In this episode:

    • Why case presentation is the biggest gap for students, and how long, disorganized presentations strain busy preceptors in a state already short on NP preceptors
    • How SNAPPS differs from the One-Minute Preceptor by giving the student ownership of the presentation
    • A live 90-second demonstration of SNAPPS for a patient with otitis externa
    • The pre-clinical immersion role-play, where students take turns as NP student, patient, and preceptor to build empathy and skill
    • How students have responded, including the SNAPPS pocket card they bring to clinicals
    • Advice for faculty in other programs: start small, and write cases around common complaints

  • Men’s Wellness in Primary Care: The Modifiable Pillars, Screening Traps, and Mental Health
    Oct 23 2026
Send us Fan MailEpisode Overview: Welcome back to the quick-hitting clinical deep dive for primary care Nurse Practitioners. In this episode, Dr. Maymi and Dr. Bumbach tackle a challenge every primary care clinician wrestles with: engaging men in preventive health and well-male exams.Tune in as we break down the staggering mortality benefits of five core lifestyle behaviors, debunk common clinical myths surrounding Testosterone Replacement Therapy versus exercise, and walk through age-appropriate screening frameworks for blood pressure, lipids, colorectal cancer, AAA, lung cancer, and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) shared decision-making. Plus, we explore gender-sensitized communication strategies and physical activity levers to break through structural stigma and support men's mental health.Key Topics Covered:The Power of 5 Modifiable Behaviors: How adhering to never smoking, healthy BMI, daily exercise, moderate alcohol, and high diet quality yields up to an 82% reduction in cardiovascular mortality.Exercise vs. TRT: Why supervised exercise—not exogenous testosterone—is the gold standard for cardiometabolic and endothelial health in aging men.Targeted Preventive Screening Frameworks: High-yield age and risk-factor cutoffs for colorectal cancer, lung cancer (LDCT), AAA ultrasound, lipid panels, and prostate cancer screening.Men's Mental Health & Stigma: Overcoming stoicism using strength-based framing, peer connectedness, and vigorous physical activity as a frontline mood intervention.Subscribe and leave a review to stay sharp on the latest evidence-based clinical practices for your primary care clinic tomorrow morning!Learning ObjectivesObjective 1: Evaluate & Prescribe Evidence-Based Lifestyle Medicine InterventionsLearning Outcome: Differentiate the cardiometabolic and mortality outcomes of modifiable lifestyle behaviors versus pharmacologic or hormonal therapies (e.g., exercise vs. testosterone replacement therapy) to formulate evidence-based lifestyle prescriptions for aging men. NONPF Competency Alignment: Competency 2 (Practice Inquiry & Scientific Foundations): Translates scientific evidence into clinical practice to optimize health outcomes.Competency 4 (Practice Delivery / Clinical Expertise): Synthesizes clinical data and evidence to prescribe non-pharmacologic and lifestyle interventions for disease prevention and cardiometabolic risk reduction. AACN Essentials Alignment:Domain 1: Knowledge for Nursing Practice: Integration of core nursing and biophysical sciences into advanced clinical decision-makingDomain 4: Practice Inquiry for Nursing Practice: Application of current research evidence to improve health outcomes and challenge clinical misconceptions (e.g., TRT myths) Objective 2: Apply Targeted Preventive Screening Frameworks in Primary CareLearning Outcome: Execute age- and risk-appropriate preventive screening protocols—including vascular (AAA), oncologic (colorectal, lung, prostate), and metabolic (diabetes/lipids) screenings—using shared decision-making models tailored to patient risk profiles. NONPF Competency Alignment:Competency 4 (Independent Practice / Direct Care): Demonstrates clinical competence in health promotion, disease prevention, and individualized risk assessment across the adult lifespan.AACN Essentials Alignment:Domain 3: Population Health: Implementation of clinical prevention strategies to reduce chronic disease burden and target population-specific mortality drivers. Domain 6: Interprofessional Partnerships: Utilizing collaborative communication and shared decision-making principles during sensitive cancer screening discussions (e.g., PSA screening). Objective 3: Implement Gender-Sensitized Mental Health StrategiesLearning Outcome: Identify gender-specific barriers to health-seeking behavior in men and integrate strength-based, gender-tailored communication strategies and lifestyle levers (e.g., physical activity, peer connectedness) to improve male mental health screening and engagementNONPF Competency Alignment: Competency 1 (Culturally Responsive Care / Diversity & Equity): Adapts clinical communication and care plans to address gender-specific cultural norms, stigma, and health disparities.Competency 3 (Communication & Interprofessional Care): Employs effective, non-stigmatizing communication techniques to engage vulnerable or reluctant patient populations.AACN Essentials Alignment:Domain 2: Person-Centered Care: Delivering holistic, empathetic, and tailored care that respects patient identity, values, and psychosocial barriers.Domain 9: Professionalism: Recognizing structural and social determinants of health (including masculine norms and stigma) that contribute to health disparities and suicide risk in men.
