Crawlspace Secrets: How a Hidden Gap Opened $312,000 Vault

A crawlspace with a thirty-inch by twenty-two-inch attic cut and a vault opened with its correct combination-$312,000 worth of safe-deposit boxes forced one by one. Who moved the combination from a secured system into the hands that worked above the bank, and how did an eleven-month-old, documented sensor gap make it possible?

In this episode, we follow the procedural path investigators took across files, logs, and the physical crawlspace to piece together what happened and ask whether the conspicuous paperwork trail pointed to negligence or planning.

Date: February 14, 2011
Person: Scott Jones
Location: 410 Merchant Street
Person: Charles Andrews
Event: Vault opened with correct combination

- The attic access panel above Halverson Brothers was cut to a rectangle roughly 30 inches by 22 inches with smooth sawed edges.
- The vault anteroom was 47 degrees outside the Spectra PIR sensor’s 90-degree, 35-foot arc, a coverage gap documented 11 months earlier.
- Charles Andrews, 44, facilities coordinator with administrative access to the vault combination system, signed off on the sensor placement and declined a recommended second sensor in writing.
- Eleven days before the burglary Andrews accessed the vault combination system for "routine maintenance verification" and the other two people with that access had not used the system in months.
- Forty-one safe-deposit boxes were forced one by one after the vault was opened cleanly on the first attempt with the correct combination.
