This passage sets forth the 3 conditions for dwelling in the presence of God: atonement, obedience, and having God's name placed upon you. The great news is that Christ has fulfilled all of those conditions for us, the benefits of which are received through faith alone.

Paul in this passage details the nature of the Greek's sin and highlights the consequences of it. He shows the evil of their sin and that it deserves death, a physical, spiritual, and eternal death. We from Paul's words realize we are that man and we must rest in Christ's saving work to free us from the power, presence, and product of our sin.

The people of God would not understand the salvific nature of Gods actions throughout history if He had not sent for them prophets to teach them. The prophets of the old testament are precursors to the ultimate prophet that is Christ. Without Jesus' prophetic office we would never be able to comprehend the salvation that was accomplished in his priestly role. As our priest, Christ fulfills the things that were prophesized before hand.

From the first chapter of John we see who Jesus is. He is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. The Holy Spirit testifies to the truth that Jesus atones for our sins by taking The Father's wrath upon Himself. Because Jesus is fully man and fully God, He is the exclusive way of salvation. Jesus is also the Christ, meaning that He is the full accomplishment and fulfilment of all the Old Testament promises. Lastly, John testifies that Jesus is the Son of Man teaching that He is fully man and fully God which is the fullest revelation of who God is.

Jesus calls us at the end of the sermon on the mount to let go of our anxious ways of living, and to trust in who God is and what He has done. The reasons Jesus gives are that we are God's children, and in His Fatherly mercy He will clothe us and feed us. The Lord is our portion in this life, and we should not cause ourselves to be anxious but bring our thoughts to Him in prayer.

The Word becoming flesh and dwelling on earth described in the first verses of John is the culmination of all the old testament prophecy and typology. John gives us four truths to base the incarnation of Christ on. His coming is from eternity. Christ being God has no beginning. His coming is our sufficiency. He is the fullness of the Word and God on earth. His Coming is unmistakable. John the Baptist was the designated forerunner and through his proclamation the whole world was told of this coming. Finally His coming is glorious and redemptive. Through His coming he has brought reconciliation with God and the regeneration of believers.

For Aaron and his sons to be ordained to the office of priest, they needed to be washed and clothed, to be consecrated by oil and blood, and to have their sins atoned for. Aaron and his sons were ordained to obey. We find that Christ has made us priests of the Most High God by washing us with the water of the word, clothing us with his righteousness, purifying us with his blood, atoning for our sins, and setting us apart as his holy people by his Spirit and blood. As priests in Christ, we have the privilege of access to the Father and the responsibility of obedience.

Paul is eager to preach the gospel in Rome because of his confidence in it . Paul trusts the proclaimed gospel because it is the power of God for salvation, the revelation of his righteousness, and the impartation of eternal life. From Paul's confidence, ours increases and brings about increased comfort.
