"Coo-ee Reciter," published in 1904, is a captivating collection of recitations that reflects the educational practices of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, where public speaking and elocution were essential skills. This anthology features a diverse range of "humorous, pathetic, dramatic, and dialect recitations" by authors from Australia, Britain, and America, offering valuable insights into the cultural attitudes and experiences of the time. While not all pieces may be considered great literature, they serve as fascinating windows into the aspirations and expectations of a bygone era. Listening to this collection today allows us to appreciate the enduring art of recitation and the timeless themes of human experience it encapsulates.
