As Powell River prepares to head to the polls on October 17th, Aaron Reid wraps up Season 4 of Coastal Currents with a personal reflection on the 2026 municipal election, the challenges facing our community, and the kind of leadership we'll need over the next four years.

Drawing on her experience as a former school trustee and Chair of the Board of Education, along with her perspective as a local resident, parent, and small business owner, Aaron explores the difference between campaigning and governing — and why the ability to work together matters just as much as campaign promises.

In this episode, Aaron discusses:

• The importance of respectful, collaborative leadership around the council table.

• Property taxes, aging infrastructure, economic development, and rebuilding Powell River's commercial and industrial tax base.

• Making Powell River a community where young people and families can build their futures.

• The lack of safe, welcoming gathering places for teenagers and nightlife opportunities for young adults.

• Affordable and accessible housing for people at every stage of life.

• Seniors housing, long-term care, and the importance of municipal advocacy.

• Homelessness, addiction, community safety, and accountability.

• The proposed City name change, reconciliation, and the need for respectful community dialogue.

• What voters should consider when evaluating candidates for public office.

This isn't an endorsement of any candidate. It's an invitation to think about what we expect from the people we elect, the responsibilities of local government, and the kind of community we want Powell River to become.

As this special municipal election series comes to a close, Aaron encourages listeners to look beyond campaign signs and social media debates, take the time to make informed choices, and remember that our responsibility as citizens doesn't end when the ballots are counted.

General Voting Day: Saturday, October 17, 2026

If you haven't already, be sure to listen to the four mayoral candidate interviews featured throughout Season 4.

Because the election determines who sits at the council table — but what happens around that table will shape our community's future.

Aaron and Charlie catch up on his hockey journey, his experiences both in Powell River and Surrey, and the energy and personality he brings to the game-day experience.

It's another opportunity to get to know the people who help make Powell River Kings hockey about more than just what happens on the ice.
