  • Your Shepherd Reports Show Margin. What Can Your Practice Afford Next?
    Oct 26 2026

Shepherd reports can show revenue, cost of goods sold and margin. But what can your practice actually afford next—a new hire, equipment, or more owner pay?

In this episode of Clean Books, Strong Practice from Anthony Barge / LAX Accounting Services, we explore the difference between reported margin, a complete profit and loss statement, and cash available after upcoming commitments. We discuss how reconciled books, operating costs, payroll, debt payments and cash reserves inform the next decision.

Practice Profit Compass is an early working build for a proposed advisory workflow using practice reports and exports. It is not a verified Shepherd integration or partnership, and automated data imports have not been established. Shepherd’s Revenue & Cost Overview is not a complete P&L; its QuickBooks Journal Entry Report supports a CSV-based workflow.

For veterinary practice owners and managers seeking a clearer connection between operational reports and financial decisions.

Educational information only; not individualized accounting, tax, legal or investment advice. Review decisions with your qualified advisers using your practice’s actual records.

  • How clearly can you see the connection between service profitability, spending, upcoming cash needs and owner pay?
    Oct 19 2026

In this episode of Clean Books, Strong Practice, we introduce Practice Profit Compass, an early-stage financial tool developed by Anthony Barge, MBA, of LAX Accounting Services for independent veterinary practice owners.

    We explore four financial questions:

    • What are different services contributing to the practice?
    • Where is money going across inventory, payroll and supplies?
    • What could the next few months mean for cash flow?
    • What information should guide owner-pay decisions?

We also discuss the public sample dashboards, cash-forecast examples, intended use of practice-management reports and exports, and questions to ask during a demonstration.

Practice Profit Compass is an early working build. Its public screens contain sample data and do not establish live integrations, forecast accuracy or financial results. The project is independent of the practice-management vendors named on its product page.

    ## The Inventory Cash Trap: Why Your Veterinary Practice Can Be Busy and Still Cash-Starved

A busy veterinary practice can have strong revenue and still feel short on cash. One often-overlooked reason is inventory: cash goes out before the item is used, sold, charged, collected, and reflected accurately in the financial statements.

In this episode, Anthony “Marlo” Barge explains how to trace inventory through the full cash chain: cash paid, item received, item stored, item used or sold, charge captured, invoice collected, and margin reported.

We look at practical examples involving pharmacy items, preventives, diets, laboratory supplies, and clinical supplies. We also walk through a four-view diagnostic that compares purchases, counts or valuation, practice-management-system usage and charges, and the general ledger.

A mismatch is not proof of theft or misconduct. It is a signal to investigate the workflow. The cause may involve purchasing, receiving, storage, units of measure, usage recording, charge capture, pricing or item mapping, counting, accounting classification, or unclear ownership.

The goal is not simply to carry the lowest possible inventory. The goal is to maintain the right level of inventory for patient care while protecting owner cash flow and practice profitability. Technology can improve visibility, but only when the underlying process, units, and responsibilities are clear.

If your practice is busy but cash remains tight, request a complimentary 20-minute Practice Profit X-Ray conversation and Profit X-Ray score. We can help identify the first financial question worth answering and determine whether an Inventory Cash Trap Scan is appropriate.
