Chatty Geek, Hidden Dragon is where counselling meets geek culture.

Hosted by counsellor and lifelong geek Chris Smith, each episode invites a fictional character from games, films or television into the imaginary counselling room. Together with guests, Chris explores the choices they make, the patterns they repeat and how they experience their world—using counselling ideas, curiosity and humour.

Come for the characters and stories you love; leave seeing them, and perhaps yourself, a little differently.

What stays with us after Roy Batty’s final moments in Blade Runner? And how much of what we see in his story comes from the hopes we bring to it?

In this CGHD Reflections episode, I return to the questions that lingered after our visit to the imaginary counselling room. Roy has reached the end of his life, but the effects of his choices continue. That leaves me thinking about uncertainty, what we leave behind, and whether we need a grand purpose for our lives to matter.

Along the way, I reflect on:

    • The limits of using Erik Erikson’s ideas to understand a four-year-old replicant, and why the person always needs to come before the theory.

    • Whether Roy finds some peace, and my own hope that he does.

    • The ways a performance, a conversation or a small kindness can affect people beyond anything we get to see.

    • My reasons for making this podcast and creating more room for people to grow and become themselves.

    • How I use AI to help make CGHD, including the occasional argument when it tries to make me sound like Spock.

There’s also a thank-you for the listener feedback and our first five-star Spotify rating, a robot joke delivered by a distinctly unimpressed AI voice, and a look ahead to our first guest episode: my wife Bex joining me to talk about Professor Snape.

  • Blade Runner's Roy Batty: Mortality, Identity & Running Out of Time

What happens when the mission that has driven you across worlds is over, the answer is no, and there is nowhere else left to go?

In the first episode inspired by a listener’s character suggestion, Chatty revisits Blade Runner and imagines Roy Batty entering the counselling room immediately after his devastating meeting with Tyrell.

Using Erik Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development—particularly integrity versus despair—this episode explores autonomy, identity, grief, mortality and the importance of having somebody bear witness. Can meaning still be created when repair is incomplete and time is almost gone? And does Roy’s final choice represent a movement towards integrity, or are we placing a comforting human story over something far messier?

Then, in Sidequests, the existential crisis becomes slightly more practical as Chatty considers returning to The Elder Scrolls Online after 24 weeks away—and whether Tamriel can remain a sidequest without quietly replacing the main quest.

Spoiler and content note: This episode discusses the ending of Blade Runner in detail, including violence, grief, death and end-of-life themes.

How do you interpret Roy’s final choice? Share your thoughts for the next CGHD Reflections episode.

In the first CGHD Reflections, Chatty looks back at Episode 1, discovers the peculiar experience of repeatedly listening to his own voice, and explains why the main episodes of Chatty Geek, Hidden Dragon aim for that oddly specific 50-minute mark.

There’s also a proper invitation to future guests: you don’t need to be a counsellor or psychologist. Bring a fictional character you care about, know far too much about, or simply cannot stop thinking about, and we’ll get curious about them together.

Plus: the first listener character suggestion takes us towards Blade Runner, Roy Batty and Deckard enter consideration for the imaginary counselling room, and a deeply questionable new feature makes its debut: Joke of the Week.

Reflections is the shorter, looser side of CGHD — a place for listener comments, questions, corrections, character suggestions, ridiculous tangents and whatever else happens between the bigger character deep dives.

    In this episode:

    • What Chatty learned from recording and editing Episode 1
    • Why CGHD's main episodes aim for around 50 minutes
    • What being a guest on the podcast actually involves
    • Roy Batty, Deckard and a possible future trip into Blade Runner
    • How listener comments and fan mail may appear in future Reflections
    • The regrettable rebirth of Joke of the Week

Thoughtful, playful conversations about fictional characters, personal growth and the stories that help us understand ourselves.
