What happens when the person we believe ourselves to be doesn't quite match the character we're expressing through our actions?
This week's contemplation began with an unexpected phone call from my 13-year-old son's school. What followed was a conversation about anger, shame, accountability, and the difference between making a bad choice and being a bad person.
But as I sat with that experience, my questions grew beyond parenting. What happens when the values we claim as individuals, institutions, or even nations don't align with the patterns of our behavior?
In this episode of The Remembrance Codes, we're exploring character as something we continually express through our choices. From family relationships to American democracy and Christianity, we'll consider the difference between the stories we tell about ourselves and the values we actually embody.
And perhaps most importantly, we'll explore how accountability doesn't have to mean condemnation. Recognizing our contradictions can become an opportunity to choose differently.
Because one mistake doesn't have to define us. But neither can we excuse repeated harm simply by claiming a better identity.
There is room for responsibility and possibility, for reckoning and becoming.
The question is not simply who we believe ourselves to be, but who we're choosing to become.
