  • Episode 57: The Spark, the Journey, and the Dialogue of Art, With Deepa Sharma (“The Seven Steps to Bliss” Book Discussion)
    Oct 13 2026

One of Deepa Sharma’s paintings inspired part of Shankar’s book, “The Seven Steps to Bliss: A Modern Upanishad” Deepa is an artist and architectural engineer, and in this conversation, we explore how one piece of art can spark another.

We talk about the three parts of art: the spark, the journey, and the dialogue with the work and its artist. Deepa shares what it was like to listen to the book as her first audiobook, what resonated most with her, and who the book might speak to. We also look at how art travels across generations, and what each generation can learn from the others.

You can find Deepa’s artwork on her website (https://artbydeepasharma.weebly.com/) and on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/deepasharma.art/).

  • Episode 56: Redefining Aging and the Practice of "Agefulness," With John Schuster
    Sep 29 2026

John Schuster calls it "agefulness," staying vital, adaptable, and open to growth at any stage of life instead of accepting decline as the default. John is a coach, teacher, and author, and at one point in the conversation, he poses a question worth sitting with: how many good vibrations have you put out into the world over your life?

We talk about how the scorecard for success shifts as we get older, and compare Indian and American attitudes toward aging, from appearance to playfulness to how openly people accept the years they've lived. John also shares his advice to his younger self: see aging as opportunity, not decline. This conversation spans three generations between Nikil, Shankar, and John, and it's proof that good vibrations and learning move in every direction, no matter your age.

  • Episode 55: The Meaning of Jiva and Life's Core Questions, With Mahesh Panchagnula ("The Seven Steps to Bliss" Book Discussion)
    Sep 15 2026

We chat with Mahesh Panchagnula, a professor at IIT Madras and host of the Professor Mahesh Podcast. Mahesh and Shankar first met in academia, and their friendship has grown into something much more. When Shankar wrote "The Seven Steps to Bliss," he invited Mahesh to be an early reader.

We talk about the aspects of the book that resonated most with Mahesh, like the name Jiva for the book's main character, and why it carries so much significance. We discuss some of the core questions around spiritual development (Who am I? Why am I here?) and Mahesh highlights the tantric aspect of Jiva’s path in the book. We also discuss how the book may serve as an entry point to Hindu philosophy for non-Hindus.

You can find more about Mahesh on his podcast, where he interviews guests to help parents and students make informed career decisions: https://www.youtube.com/@ProfMaheshPodcast

  • Episode 54: The Ilaiyaraja 50 Concert and Why Music Means So Much to South Asians
    Sep 1 2026

Music is universal, but in South Asian culture, it's tied to something specific: the movies. That link means songs carry entire stories with them, and they become a soundtrack to our own memories and moments too. We share our experience at the Ilaiyaraja 50 concert, celebrating fifty years of work from one of Tamil music's most legendary composers, caught one night apart in Seattle and Los Angeles.

We talk through what made the concert so interesting, with Ilaiyaraja's passion still visible after five decades and at the age of 83. We also discuss why the music you grow up with, especially in your teens and twenties, hits differently. We compare notes across two generations and two very different audiences, including the differences in social etiquette at the LA show that left us scratching our heads.

  • Episode 53: Mental Health and Doing What You Love With Abhijith Ravinutala
    Aug 18 2026

Have we really gotten better at talking about mental health in the South Asian community, or just better at using the language? Abhijith Ravinutala joins us again to pick up where we left off in Episode 35, when he first shared his journey with mental health and the loss that led him to create MannMukti.

We get honest about what doesn't help, like being told "have you tried this?" or the toxic positivity that keeps people from being vulnerable. Mental health isn't a math problem to solve in the moment. Therapy can help, not just to manage it, but to see blind spots someone may be too close to notice on their own.

We also talk about Abhijith's own journey, leaving corporate America to write full time, and the ease that comes when your work finally matches what you love. We share what it took to find the right therapist and to finally open up, including the value of working with one who understood our culture.

Come for the honest conversation, and stay for the ideas that might change how you think about yourself.

  • Episode 52: "The Seven Steps to Bliss" Book Club with Ravi Ram and Sujit Nair
    Jul 28 2026

We welcome Ravi Ram and Sujit Nair, two friends who joined Nikil for a weekly book club over four weeks to read through Shankar's book, "The Seven Steps to Bliss: A Modern Upanishad." Shankar joined partway through our book club meetings to hear our reactions and answer our questions himself, a rare chance to talk directly with an author about his own book.

When we ask Ravi and Sujit what stood out to them, their answer is simple: the whole book! We also dig into some of the bigger themes the book raises for us: the pull between head and heart on the spiritual path, what non-duality and samadhi actually feel like beyond the page, and how the book's paradoxes echo the ones we live with every day. We can't resist gushing about Shankar's voice acting in Chapter 4, where he plays a character representing the inner critic. It's a wonderful, sensational performance, unlike anything any of us had heard from him before.

This conversation is a reminder that a book can feel richer in community, especially with the person who wrote it in the room, drawing out new questions and meaning as the conversation unfolds.

  • Episode 51: Chasing The Same Joy With Tim Bruster ("The Seven Steps to Bliss" Book Discussion)
    Jul 21 2026

We welcome Tim Bruster, a retired United Methodist pastor, who met Shankar by chance after a delayed flight turned into friendly conversation and, eventually, a real friendship. Tim read Shankar's book, "The Seven Steps to Bliss: A Modern Upanishad," and we wanted to hear what he took from it.

Tim shares how the book gave him a deeper understanding of Hinduism, and the three of us dig into what resonated with him. He talks about how the book's core message, about moving forward on your own spiritual path, is a value that matters to everybody, regardless of what you believe, and how relatable that makes it.

It's a conversation about spiritual growth as something universal, not confined to any one tradition, and about the quiet joy of realizing that different faiths might be pointing at the same underlying truth.

  • Episode 50: All Five Elements Live in You
    Jul 7 2026

We talk about the five great elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space, and how Nikil has come to see them not just as forces in nature, but as elements that live within all of us, forming an Elemental Leadership Framework for understanding our own mindsets and behavior. Nikil shares how he started noticing these patterns in himself, especially in high pressure and high leverage moments.

We dig into how each element can show up out of purpose or out of fear. Nikil’s core elemental strength, and his natural default, is water, which can look like adaptability and flow, or just as easily fear-based people-pleasing. We talk about how these elements show up for each of us, and how understanding them has helped us both make better sense of ourselves.

It’s a conversation about self awareness, about how even though every element lives in us, we each tend to lean on one by default, and about how naming that default is what makes it possible to choose a different response instead of falling into it automatically.
