The feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica celebrates the cathedral church of the whole Catholic world. It is from his cathedra, that a bishop teaches the Catholic Faith and exercises his apostolic authority. Bishops are meant to serve as the instruments of Christ. Their failure to faithfully transmit His teachings is a great tragedy of our times. This feast also reminds us that we will all stand in judgment before Christ the King. Although we are not political or ecclesial rulers, and so our influence in the public sphere is limited, we must nevertheless honor Christ as King in our lives and offer reparation for the offenses His Kingship suffers.
