  • DEHYDRATION WARNING SIGNS: DON'T MISS THESE SYMPTOMS
    Oct 14 2026
Tina Rains, RN, CALA, and Melinda Foster discuss why hydration is especially critical for seniors, and how dehydration can affect everything from kidney function and blood pressure to elimination, confusion, and joint pain. The conversation centers on one family caregiving experience and expands into practical ways to help older adults stay hydrated safely and consistently. In this episode, Melinda shares what she learned while caring for her mother, and Tina explains the physiology behind it in clear, caregiver-friendly terms. They also cover how electrolytes support hydration, why movement and fiber matter too, and why overhydrating without balance can create problems.Key topics:Melinda shares how her mother’s dehydration led to an emergency room visit and a doctor’s warning that 64 ounces of water a day is nonnegotiableTina explains why older adults are at higher risk because kidney function declines with age and the body filters fluids and toxins less efficientlyThe discussion covers how low hydration can contribute to constipation, elimination issues, and even painful manual impactions in seniorsMelinda describes a practical caregiving system she used: lining up four bottles of water in the refrigerator each day so her mother can track intake easilyTina explains why dehydration can also worsen blood pressure instability, dizziness, falls, fatigue, and confusionThey discuss the role of electrolytes, especially salt and potassium, in keeping hydration balanced and supporting kidney, cardiac, and brain functionTina warns that adding too much water without electrolytes can wash out minerals, especially in seniors with weaker kidney functionThe conversation touches on temperature regulation, explaining why seniors may not feel hot even when they are overheatingMelinda shares that her mother may need nutritional support and hydration before any colon therapy can safely help with eliminationTina emphasizes that hydration works best alongside movement and fiber, and that caregivers need to support themselves tooNotable Quotes:“The difference between life and death can be how hydrated you are.”“Water, the most important. A high fiber diet, second important, and movement.”“Hydration is key, key, key.”Nutritional Broth Recipe (mentioned in this episode)Boil together, then strain and serve warm to hydrate and nourish the body.Chicken Broth and/or Chicken Bone BrothChicken BreastCarrotsOnionHead of GarlicA Whole Sliced Lemon!!!Boil for at least an hour, or more. Then strain! • Is It Time to Move Mom to Assisted Living? (7 Signs to Watch)
    Oct 8 2026
"Is it time?" It's the question every caregiver eventually asks, and almost never feels ready to answer. Maybe it's the mail piling up for months. Maybe it's walking into your mom's apartment and realizing the woman who used to make you re-clean the kitchen as a kid now has stuff everywhere. Or maybe it's something quieter: she's just isolating, sitting in front of the TV, not herself anymore. This week, Tina Rains, RN CALA, and Melinda Lee Foster talk through the real, practical signs that it may be time to consider assisted living, unexplained falls and bruises, expired food in the fridge, missed medications, and the guilt that keeps families waiting far longer than they should. They also break down the actual cost comparison between hiring 24-hour private care versus assisted living (it's not what most people assume), the difference between independent living, assisted living, and memory care, and why the right residential model can mean never having to move your parent again. If you've been quietly wondering whether it's time to have this conversation with your family, this episode was made for you.💬 Topics Covered:The early warning signs it may be time for assisted living, falls, hygiene changes, isolation, missed appointmentsWhy "protecting" a parent's independence can sometimes do more harm than goodThe real cost comparison: 24-hour private caregivers vs. assisted livingThe difference between independent living, assisted living, and memory careWhy choosing a facility that can handle increasing levels of care matters more than how nice it looksHow to navigate the guilt and have the conversation as a family team, not a takeoverA free downloadable guide to help you know when it's time and how to start the conversation🎙️ Hosted By:Tina Rains, RN CALAMelinda Lee Foster📚 Take the Next Step:This podcast exists to make sure caregivers stop feeling alone in this. • Why Mom Turns "Crazy" at 5PM — What Sundowners Really Is
    Sep 30 2026

"Why is mom going crazy at night?" That's the question caregivers ask Tina again and again, and it's almost always the same answer: it's not crazy, it's sundowners. Sweet and adorable at noon, angry and packing a bag to "go home" by 5PM. If that switch sounds familiar, this episode explains exactly why it happens and what you can actually do about it.

This week, Tina Rains, RN CALA, and Melinda Lee Foster break down sundowners, what it is, why it hits like clockwork in the late afternoon, and the practical daily changes (light, sugar, activity, schedule) that can genuinely reduce it. They also cover the other conditions that get mistaken for sundowners, like UTIs and medication changes, and why sleep deprivation is quietly making caregivers sick too.

If your parent seems fine all day and then turns into someone else by dinnertime, this episode was made for you.

    💬 Topics Covered:

. What sundowners actually is and why it happens around 4–5PM
. Why UTIs, medication changes, and other conditions get misdiagnosed as sundowners, and how to check for a UTI at home
Why giving more medication when someone "acts up" often makes it worse
. Morning sunlight, daytime activity, and circadian rhythm tricks that reduce nighttime agitation
. Why the afternoon nap is the enemy, and what to do instead
. Simple diet swaps (sugar-free dessert at lunch, decaf at night) that calm evening behavior
. Why caregiver sleep deprivation is a health crisis of its own, and when to bring in overnight help

  • What Hospice Actually Does (It's Not What You Think)
    Sep 24 2026
You've cooked her meals, cleaned up after her, even taken her to get her nails done, wait, wrong episode. Here's this one: You think hospice means the last few days of life. So does almost everyone. But that misconception is keeping families from getting support months, even years, before they think they're "ready" for it.This week, Tina Rains, RN CALA, and Melinda Lee Foster sit down with Kelly Garrett from Empath Health to break apart the biggest myths about hospice care. Kelly explains why hospice is a supportive service, not a countdown, and walks through everything from respite care for exhausted caregivers to music therapy, veteran honor programs, and free grief support for anyone who's experienced a loss, hospice patient or not.If you've ever wondered "is it too soon to call hospice" or didn't know the difference between hospice and palliative care, this episode clears it all up.💬 Topics Covered:- Why hospice is so much more than end-of-life care (and why waiting too long means missing out on real support)- What actually qualifies someone for hospice — and why a "six months or less" diagnosis doesn't mean what people assume- The five days of respite care built into the Medicare hospice benefit that most caregivers don't know exists- The real difference between hospice and palliative care, explained simply- Hospice extras most families never use: music therapy, pet therapy, end-of-life doulas, and veteran honor programs- Free grief support programs available to anyone, whether or not their loved one was on hospice- Why asking for help early is one of the most important things a caregiver can do🎙️ Hosted By:Tina Rains, RN CALAMelinda Lee Foster🎙️ Featured Guest:Kelly Garrett — Empath HealthKelly Garrett works with Empath Health, serving families across Florida's west coast — from Marion County down to Fort Myers and over to Palm Beach and Broward — with hospice care, home health, personal care, dementia care services, and the Impact Life Medicaid program that helps people stay safely in their own homes. • "Mom, Did You Steal My Jewelry?" — Dementia & False Accusations
    Sep 18 2026

You've cooked her meals, cleaned up after her, even taken her to get her nails done, and then out of nowhere, she accuses you of stealing her jewelry. If you've ever stood there thinking "what is happening right now," this episode is going to explain exactly what's going on in her brain, and why it's not personal.

This week, Tina Rains, RN CALA, and Melinda Lee Foster get into one of the most painful and confusing parts of dementia caregiving: false accusations of theft. They share real stories, from missing wedding photos to rosaries hidden in underwear drawers and break down why dementia causes this, how to respond in the moment without escalating it, and how to protect yourself and any caregiver you hire from getting blamed unfairly.

If your parent has ever accused you (or someone caring for them) of stealing, and you didn't know whether to argue, cry, or just walk away, this episode was made for you.

    💬 Topics Covered:

. Why dementia causes people to believe things are being "stolen" from them
. The real reason arguing or defending yourself only makes it worse
. A simple language technique, validate, partner, redirect — that calms accusations fast
. Why gentle touch can de-escalate a paranoid or agitated moment
. Practical steps to protect a hired caregiver from false theft accusations
. When to suspect something else (UTI, medication, dehydration) is behind sudden new behavior
. How to be proactive instead of reactive before the next accusation happens

  • The Caregiver Needs A Caregiver Too | Tina & Melinda
    Sep 9 2026

You take care of everyone else's appointments, meds, meals, and meltdowns, but who's checking in on you? If the answer is "no one," or "I don't have time to think about it," this episode is about to name something you've probably felt for a long time and never said out loud.

This week, Tina Rains, RN CALA, and Melinda Lee Foster sit down without a guest for a raw, just-the-two-of-us conversation about the caregiver identity, the one that forgets it's allowed to need care too. They talk honestly about the moments they've each hit a wall, what it actually looks like to ask for help (and why it's so hard), and how to build support into a life that already feels maxed out.

If you're the one everyone calls when something goes wrong, and no one calls to ask how you're doing, this episode was made for you.

    💬 Topics Covered:

Why caregivers are often the last people who ask for help — even from other caregivers
The difference between "coping" and actually being supported
What it looks like to build a support system when you feel like you don't have time for one
Tina and Melinda's own moments of hitting a breaking point
Small ways to let someone else carry part of the load, starting this week
Why asking for help isn't giving up on your role — it's what makes you able to keep showing up

  • Caregiver Burnout Nobody Talks About (And How to Actually Fix It)
    Sep 4 2026

You're snapping at people you love. You're running on coffee and adrenaline. You keep telling yourself you'll rest "once things calm down", except they never do. That's not a personality flaw. That's caregiver burnout, and it's quietly reshaping your nervous system, your relationships, and your health.

This week, Tina Rains, RN CALA, and Melinda Lee Foster sit down with Dr. Julia Guerrini to pull apart what's actually happening inside a caregiver's body during chronic stress, and why willpower alone can't fix it. You'll walk away with real, usable techniques to calm your nervous system in the moment, not just advice to "rest more" that never fits into real life.

If you're caring for a parent, a spouse, or anyone with dementia or memory loss, and you feel like you're barely holding it together, this episode was made for you.

    💬 Topics Covered:

    1. The early warning signs of caregiver burnout that get dismissed as "just tired"
    2. What chronic stress does to your brain, hormones, and immune system over time
    3. A fast breathing technique to interrupt panic or overwhelm in under a minute
    3. Physical red flags that mean your nervous system needs help
    4. Why generic self-care advice fails caregivers specifically
    5. Small daily habits that build long-term resilience without adding to your to-do list

    🎙️ Hosted By:

  • How Funeral Pre-Planning Can Prevent Sibling Conflict and Family Stress
    Aug 27 2026

What happens when siblings disagree about a parent’s final wishes, and how can families prevent those disagreements before a crisis?

In this episode of The Caregiver Podcast – We Laugh So We Don’t Cry, Tina Rains, RN, CALA and Melinda Lee Foster sit down with Legacy Advisor Monica French for a conversation many families avoid until they’re forced to have it.

When Mom or Dad passes away without clearly communicating their wishes, adult children can suddenly find themselves making emotional decisions about burial, cremation, funeral arrangements, finances, and personal belongings. And when siblings remember those wishes differently, grief can quickly turn into conflict.

Monica shares what she has witnessed working with families and explains why having these conversations earlier can be one of the greatest gifts you give the people you love. As she explains in the episode, families can find themselves arguing over whether Mom wanted to be buried or cremated when those wishes were never clearly established.

We talk about funeral pre-planning, cremation vs. burial, the cost of final arrangements, what to do with cremated remains, organizing important information, veteran burial benefits, and how planning ahead can help prevent sibling conflict.

Most importantly, this conversation isn't simply about preparing for the end of life. It’s about honoring the life someone has lived while protecting the people they love from having to make difficult decisions during one of their most emotional moments. As Monica says:

“You’re honoring somebody, a life that’s been lived.”

If you have aging parents, are caring for a loved one, or have siblings who may eventually have to make these decisions together, this is a conversation worth having before you need it.
